Overview
Daggerheart is a cinematic, collaborative fantasy RPG of incredible magic and heroic adventure. You play driven characters—soldiers, schemers, and sigil‑wielders—who chase epic goals: stop an assassination, seal an ancient horror, or steal a relic before it falls into the wrong hands. Daggerheart is fiction‑first and fast: declare your intent, pick a Move, roll the dice, and engage with the other players in the outcome that deepens the story. Combat is bold and free‑flowing, magic is dangerous and alluring, and every roll of the hope and fear dice has a chance to twist the game to something new and exciting.
Bring curiosity and a collaborative spirit. Daggerheart focuses on the characters and the story. The game leverages 2d12 Duality Dice (different colors), a set of polyhedral dice (d20, d12, d10, d8, d6, d4), the core game cards (ancestry, community, subclass, domain), and character sheets. The game emphasizes the following Player Principles: be a fan of your character, spotlight your friends, build the world together, play to find out what happens, and hold on gently so the story and game can carry you on a wild ride!
Making Your World Feel Alive
As a GM a major part of making your world feel alive is by making the characters in the game act appropriately in response to the player's actions and activities. There are two recommended ways to do this.
These are my two recommended ways to do this:
- Understand the Monsters and the Characters
- Understand the World
Understand the Monsters and Characters

The Monsters Know What They Are Doing is a practical, tactical guide that teaches GMs how monsters should fight, hunt, and survive—so encounters feel smart, dangerous, and narratively satisfying. This is a recommended read to learn how creature types, ability contours, action economy, and instincts shape behavior; how to make simple monsters tactically interesting; and how to prep your content so combat runs smoothly instead of devolving into “stab‑stab‑stab.” Whether you’re a new GM learning to think like the monsters or an experienced DM looking to sharpen your encounters, this book gives concrete, usable advice you can drop into any session. Visit https://www.themonstersknow.com/ for more resources from this author and the rest of the series.
Characters and Non-Monster NPCs are similar - You'll use your player's backstories, history, bonds, and connections to setup their interactions with characters that are not monsters in the world. A good Session Zero is recommended for gathering this info and putting together what is needed for story arcs and encounters.
I recommend the Session Zero System for you and your players from November's event.
Understand the World
If you are running your game in an established world or module, then getting the books, reading them, and taking detailed notes will work. But what if you are doing something custom? What if you don't have a world or a guide? Then there is another Session Zero recommendation - Create the world with your players!
There are many resources for this, but I recommend turning it into a game with The Quiet Year to play and create a world that you and your players are invested in.
The Quiet Year can be used to build playable worlds. It's simple turn structure—draw a card, tick project dice, take an action—translates directly into locations, events, and NPCs you can drop into any campaign. We can use the turns of the game to prompt for a scene or mystery; use the card draws to seed a ruin, alien wreck, or haunted block. The best part is the players are involved in the creation of the world, allowing their characters to integrate with the game with history, secrets, grudges, or political intrigue that later become hooks.
I recommend listening to The Adventure Zone: Ethersea Prologue to see how it can be used and adapt it for your game!
